From March 16th to 18th 1938, Barcelona was bombed continuously.
In the 1930s, modern industrial technology applied to war created a new situation: massive, instant and indiscriminate destruction affecting civilians as well as soldiers. Barcelona was the first large city systematically bombed from the air, after the tragic bombing of Gernika.
From March 16th to 18th 1938, Barcelona was bombed continuously, day and night for three days; thousands of people lost their home and one thousand and three hundred died (one hundred and eighteen children). Looking beyond the case of Barcelona, the events set the trend for the Second World War and the bombings of London, Coventry, Dresden, Cologne, Hiroshima, Nagasaki…
